Why is Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, depicted with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes?

The thousand arms symbolize the power to help all beings, while the thousand eyes represent the wisdom to perceive suffering throughout the world. This extraordinary image is a visual expression of Buddhist compassion.

Dating from the Yuan dynasty, Cave 3 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang features exquisite murals of the Eleven-Headed, Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Guanyin. The countless hands radiate like a halo, demonstrating the remarkable precision and elegance of traditional Chinese line painting.
